Selecting the correct procedure code is important to identify what was performed, but some would argue selecting the correct diagnosis code is the most important because it will often determine if you get paid. Knowing the guidelines for applying correct ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding and updates is essential for any practice. This presentation will review the new timeline for biannual updates to ICD-10-CM coding, the new, deleted, and revised ICD-10-CM codes, and guidelines for 2023. We will also review the “language” of ICD-10-CM and understanding what the common terms and guidelines mean when selecting the most appropriate code.

Objectives:

• Understand the language and terminology of ICD-10-CM to ensure compliance and accuracy when selecting the correct diagnosis code
• Understand most recent updates for providers to the diagnosis codes for ICD-10-CM released biannually.
• Understand most recent updates for providers to the guidelines for applying ICD-10-CM code changes released biannually.
