Session Descriptions*

Compliance Liability Exposure: Real World Claims and How to Prevent
This session will provide an overview of:

  • Key liability risks for billing company owners, administrators, and managers
  • Real cases to learn from (that is what not to do)!
  • Best practices for mitigating risks
  • How to respond to allegations and investigations
  • Insurance risk management and E&O coverage for HBMA members

Understanding the Burden and Complexity of a Properly Conducted Risk Assessment
The vast majority of HIPAA fines and findings point to just one failed aspect of the compliance rules; a failure in the Security Risk Assessment process.  Learn how HBMA member organizations have a unique responsibility is the proper storage, creation, transmission, and use of PHI (protected health information) and how a properly conducted Risk Assessment can protect your business and show your client practices how you are taking their shared patient PHI seriously.

Cyber Security
How can your organization learn lessons from the data breaches that have been occurring and making the news? Learning from other organizations' mistakes could be one of the ways for your company to prevent, detect, or correct a breach. You will leave this session with some easy takeaways you can put into practice right away.

Incorporating Compliance into Your Contracts
Compliance remains a key missing piece to most billings service agreements. Billing companies frequently have a standard agreement that does an excellent job on addressing standard business terms other than compliance terms. However, these contracts frequently fail to address each party's compliance obligations. This session will focus on reaching the right balance between too much and too little compliance in your written service contracts. Further, it will identify "must have" provisions that you will need in situations where unexpected compliance issues emerge.

Coding & Compliance: What You Don't Know Can Hurt You
Billing Companies are in a unique position when it comes to the revenue cycle process. Even if the client contract specifies who is responsible and accountable for code assignment, it does not necessarily protect the organization from risk associated with incorrect coding and compliance practices. This session will focus on the key things that billing company owners and managers need to know to protect their organization.

HIPAA: Protecting Yourself as a Business Associate
For the majority of HBMA members, the role of Business Associate, to your client medical practices, can leave you wondering “What am I supposed to be doing?”, “How does HIPAA apply to me?” and how do I get my employees onboard, some who have never worked in a medical practice? This education session will help you understand your responsibilities under a Business Associate Agreement, Patient Communications, Release of Information, and Indemnification. It’s all about Protecting your Organization and the Practices you serve.

Crafting an Effective Compliance Plan: Whistle While you Work
Authoring an effective compliance plan is not a "one size fits all" endeavor. In this program, we will explore methods of developing or revising a compliance plan that appropriately matches your company's size, scope of services, and operational model. We will consider the OIG's recommended elements of an effective compliance program as well as their resource guide to measuring program effectiveness.

Government Update
The World of healthcare is constantly changing and evolving. HBMA's Government Relations Director, Bill Finerfrock, will break down some of the most recent happenings in Washington and provide important insight for the future of your organization and your compliance program.

How to Effectively Comply with MIPS
MIPS is a complicated point-based program that requires Clinicians to earn points to avoid penalties and maximize reimbursements. However, it is very challenging and time consuming for healthcare practices to know how to best comply given that the final ruling for 2018 was over 1,600 pages long.  In this session we will simplify MIPS by identifying and discussing the important nuances of compliance as well as some of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of the program.  We will also share strategies that enable Clinicians to optimize their quality measures performance to increase financial payouts from the program.

*Additional session descriptions will be added as they become available.
