United Healthcare - Control How You Get Paid From Members

Control how you get paid from members

Take these steps to accept virtual payments

We’ve changed our process for how you’ll be paid by members. Receiving and reconciling virtual payments from members has never been easier. Two new features added to the UnitedHealthcare Provider Portal give you greater control.

What’s new and what to do

  • Payments from members now appear in Document Library within the portal.
  • Member payment information will no longer be sent to you by digital fax or paper. They’ll now be available exclusively in Document Library.
  • Regularly check the new Payments from Members folder in Document Library. Verify if any payments were uploaded to your organization’s account.
  • Use your credit card point-of-sale terminal to process the full payment amount as a credit transaction. Do not process it as a debit card.

What stays the same

Logging in to the portal to access members’ statements is the same process as currently used for virtual card payer payments. You still have 30 days to process member virtual card payments (VCPs) before they expire and are refunded automatically to the member.

Overview of new features

  • Document Library – Payment from Members folder
The digital notices containing members’ VCPs replace faxes and paper mail, enabling faster insight into your accounts receivable. You can search for VCPs and remittance documents by payment number, ensuring quick access and better communication with members. Our Document Library Interactive User Guide shows you where and how to review stored documents.

Set an email recipient for your practice in Document Delivery Settings under the Payments from Members tab. The designated recipient will receive email notifications whenever a new document is uploaded to Document Library, helping you stay informed and organized. See our
Document Delivery Settings Interactive User Guide for step-by-step instructions on setting up email recipients.
  • Payment Preference Center – Payments your way
The new Payment Preference Center under Profile & Settings shows how you receive members’ payments. VCP is the default method. It’s a secure, digital way to transmit payments initiated from UnitedHealthcare by members.

If your practice prefers direct billing, you can opt out of VCPs. When you opt out, the payment button is removed from the member portal. Options to receive paper checks or straight-through processing (STP) VCPs for member payments are not available until later in 2026.
