Description:
This session will explore revenue cycle challenges unique to interventional radiology.  As a result of the various systems and touch points in interventional radiology, there are often misconceptions among clinical and billing personnel as to who is ultimately responsible for coding these procedures.  Additionally, interventionalists are responsible for evaluation and management of their patients, but barriers to communication and system limitations often lead to these services being left out of the billing cycle completely.  To further complicate the process, there are many coding edits and guidelines that limit what can actually be billed.  The lack of understanding of these challenges often leads to frustration from the providers as well as potential delay and reduction in revenue.  Attendees will gain a better understanding of these obstacles and discuss possible solutions that have been effective in other practices.

Course participants will be able to:

• Recognize the differences payment systems for hospital and physician billing and how each impact interventional radiology.
• Identify potential solutions for capturing evaluation and management services within the hospital in order to bill appropriately and effectively
• Gain knowledge of the most common interventional coding edits and guidelines that may impact the workflow and revenue cycle

Speaker Bio:
Jennifer Bash has been employed by ADVOCATE RCM since 2002.  As Director of Coding Education, her primary focus is educating physicians and coders on radiology coding and documentation issues.  In addition, she has been a regular national speaker on radiology and interventional radiology coding and documentation guidelines.  Jennifer is a member of the RBMA, AAPC and AHIMA and serves on the RBMA Virtual Education committee as well as the Radiology Coding Certification Board Examination Committee.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management & Systems from The Ohio State University.
