billing industry that may have a positive or negative effect
on your individual company.
AFFORDABLE CARE ACT
Robert Burleigh
How will the Affordable Care Act affect your clients and
your business? You need to have a comprehensive under-
standing of the law that will allow you to be postured for
a proactive approach versus being in a reactive only mode.
WORKING LUNCH

to develop solutions to a challenging situation that many
may be facing in the industry.
SHIFT HAPPENS: BUSINESS AS UNUSUAL
Robert Burleigh and Dave Jakielo
Never in the history of the medical billing industry have so
many paradigm shifts been occurring. This session will
explore the threats and opportunities that every company
will be facing for years to come. Is the glass half full or
half empty? Medical billing is still a very regional business
and it is important that you are aware of the trends that
are redefining the industry in various parts of the country
because these threats could be heading your way.
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR PROFITABILITY
Robert Burleigh
Are you aware of the best practices that have been implemented by
some of the best companies? With declining reimbursement and
increasing expenses, mediocrity cannot be tolerated. It is mandatory
that profitability becomes everyone’s priority.
FRIDAY SESSIONS
THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT: ARE YOU READY
FOR JANUARY 2014?
Brenda L. Gleason
The Affordable Care Act was passed by Congress and signed by Pres-
ident Obama in March of 2010. Four years later, we are on the edge
of the launch date of coverage for millions of previously uninsured
Americans. What does January 2014 mean for health care providers
and their 2014 income? For the office management of medical prac-
tices? For billing companies – as billers AND as employers? For the
health care system going forward? What should you be doing RIGHT
NOW to be prepared for the changes on January 1, 2014?
Brenda L. Gleason, consultant and faculty at The George Washington
University School of Public Health and Health Services will help us think
through where we are at this historic point in health care and where we
are likely headed next.
MEDICAL DEBT AND HOW TO DEALWITH IT
Robert Burleigh
The past decade has seen an exponential increase in the amounts
owed by patients for their medical care – even those who are “well”
insured. This has resulted in an explosion of medical debt and, when
the economy crashed, has had widespread and sometimes unex-
pected effects on patients and providers and billing companies. As
billers, we must balance effective support of our clients cash flows
with sensitive handling of their patients’ liabilities, while avoiding
creating new legal risks for our clients and ourselves.
HOW TO BUILD AN EXCELLENT STAFF
Dave Jakielo
Today you cannot spend the majority of your time working
in
your business you must spend a larger and larger portion of your time
working
on
your business. However, before you can shift your priorities,
you must have an excellent team of employees who can keep your
well-oiled billing machine firing on all cylinders. This session will cover
the “How To’s” of building an excellent staff.
