What a Year for HBMA! WE HAVE MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS IN 2014 WOW – WHAT A YEAR THIS HAS BEEN FOR HBMA! Indeed, we have seen many changes in our association, business, and industry. I knew when I took office that this would be a challenging year; however, as a volunteer leader who cares about our association and industry, I was up for the challenge. Now it is time to reflect on all that we have done, and look forward to the year ahead. First, let’s pause to take stock of our progress. The volunteer leaders, board of directors, committee chairs, committee members, member survey takers, member focus group and Town Hall participants, PRESIDENT’S message THe jOurNal OF THe HealTHCare BIllINg aND maNagemeNT assOCIaTION 3 etc. all set the course for a stronger HBma. With the help of our new association management company, we established better financial reporting and cost accounting for all program activities; developed a pathway for recertification and a process to improve the overall certification program; established an ad hoc Bylaws Committee to develop new guiding principles for improved HBma governance; commissioned a Business strategy Workgroup to help chart the long-term strategic direction for the organization; developed strategic partnerships with other organizations for the benefit of our membership; started a preferred vendor program to offer better vendor pricing and services for HBma members; enhanced educational programming and format; continued our strong government relations outreach; established a new membership communication campaign, “On Pace,” to keep members informed of strategic planning and rebranding initiatives; and built a pathway for student engagement. That is quite the list! Despite our remarkable progress, there are challenges ahead. We, as HBma members, still face great change at all levels of our profession. I can assure you, though, that HBma will continue to help its members prepare for change through advocacy in Washington, as well as through education, including live events, webinars, publications, the message board, and networking. But we cannot do this alone. as I mentioned in my last message, HBma is only as strong as its membership. We have several opportunities for you to serve the association. You can participate in member surveys, focus groups, and educational programs. You can also join a committee, taskforce, or workgroup. If you want to enact change, you can get involved with HBma to do just that. We must work together to shape our future, both as an association and industry. my time as president is nearly over. I thank you for the privilege of serving as the HBma 2014 president. Please join me in supporting our next president, Curt Cvikota, CHBme. Curt has been an active HBma volunteer leader and true industry professional in healthcare billing and management. He started in the industry as a young boy, working for his father. He will bring years of HBma experience and wisdom and will continue the tradition of past HBma leaders by putting the interest of HBma first. although my term ends on December 31, 2014, I will continue to be an active volunteer leader on your behalf. Next year, I look forward to serving on the board under Curt’s leadership as president. and, as always, I welcome your comments or feedback on how we can improve your member value proposition. Together, we are stronger. Together, we are HBma! Happy holidays!
