Getting Ready for 2024: Coding and Compliance Update Presented by Melody Mulaik

As presented at HBMA's 2023 Fall Conference September 26th-28th, 2023.

Description:
This session is designed to prepare billing company staff for accurate assignment of procedure codes for physician services in 2024 and to assist with ensure appropriate education for clients.  Significant new and revised CPT® codes will be reviewed and discussed. Important changes to CPT® guidelines (e.g., CPT® manual section introductions) will also be reviewed.  New and proposed compliance updates will also be discussed.  Finally, attendees will receive tips for identifying action items for implementing the new and revised procedures codes.

Objectives:
Course participants will be able to:

  • Review and discuss the most significant new and revised CPT® procedure codes and guidelines for 2024
  • Review and discuss the most significant known and proposed compliance updates for 2024
  • Identify steps that billing companies need to take to prepare for accurate code assignment in 2024

Speaker Bio:
Melody W. Mulaik is the President of Revenue Cycle Coding Strategies. She is a frequent speaker and author for nationally recognized professional organizations and publications. Melody’s areas of expertise include coding, management engineering, operations improvement and she is nationally recognized for her extensive compliance expertise.

Melody often speaks at national conferences on many topics including Internal Audit Program Development, Coding Compliance and other healthcare compliance issues. Recent speaking engagements include the Healthcare Compliance Association (HCCA), Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC), AHRA: The Association for Imaging Management, Radiology Business Management Association (RBMA), Healthcare Billing Management Association (HBMA) and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Melody is the AHRA liaison to the American College of Radiology (ACR) Economics Commission and her firm, RCCS, serves as consulting support for the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR).

Melody is a frequent author for national publications and writes the bi-monthly coding column for AHRA’s Radiology Management and the Healthcare Billing Management Association’s (HBMA) Billing. 

Prior to her current position, Melody held the position of Vice President of Billing Compliance for the largest national billing company, where she was responsible for the implementation, oversight, and maintenance of the billing compliance program.

Melody holds a Master of Science in Health Systems (MSHS) degree and a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering (BIE) degree, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), in Atlanta, Georgia. She also several coding certifications and is a recipient of the prestigious AHRA Gold Award for her organizational and industry contributions.
