By Yvonne Moncovich The Payoffs and Perils of Working from Home IS THIS THE RIGHT MODEL FOR YOUR COMPANY? T hese days, more people are choosing to work from home. According to Global Research Analytics, 2.6 percent of the US workforce consider home to be their primary place of work, and the number of employees working from home has increased by 79.7 percent between 2005 and 2012. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2008, on average, the US labor force consisted of 154 million people. Also keep in mind that the years in which working from home increased are considered to be recession years, when the overall workforce declined.1 medical billing companies are not immune to this trend. When straightline medical Billing was founded in 2005, co-owner Pete gratale implemented a work-from-home model. “We employed experienced billers who initially spent time in the office for software setup, but the end goal was always to have them work from home,” says gratale. However, during its growth, the company recruited people with at least five years of experience and, after a short training period in the office, transitioned them to work from home. This model worked well for the company. However, what we have found about work-from-home employment (also called telecommuting or teleworking) is that it can be the best choice for some and the worst option for others. Is Telework Right for My Company? The biggest payoffs for adopting a telework model are increased staff productivity, decreased office expenses, and employee job satisfaction. a recent study from stanford university found that people working from home were 13 percent more productive than their officebased counterparts. surprisingly, at the end of the study, half of the study participants returned to the office, and the at-home productivity comparison increased to 22 percent greater efficiency.2
