HBMA Benefit finding employees through Performance resources By John Howard, Ph.D. and Bill Carns, CHBME March 2009, Performance Resources, Inc. began providing the HBMA EmployerPages system (www.hbmajobs.com) as a complimentary member benefit. The site allows members to obtain a free online recruiting and hiring system as part of an umbrella site branded for HBMA and individually branded for participating members. The site has proven to be a very effective hiring tool for HBMA members and has steadily grown in popularity. At this writing, 251 HBMA members are using the service. indicators of the site’s success include the following monthly numbers: • average jobs posted at one time: 73 • average number of applicants per job: 151 • average number of monthly visitors to the site: 17,344 over time, a suite of scientifically validated assessments have been added to the basic functions provided on the site. these assessments are designed to help provide members with valuable information for use in the selection process; they are job-specific indicators of the probability that a candidate will become a good performer in the member’s job. the following assessments are available on the hbma jobs site at no charge to members through the remainder of 2013: • Pre-hire risk reduction (may be used with any job) • Positive attitude inventory (may be used with any job) • a/r and collections assessment • billing and coding assessment • customer service assessment • management in billing and coding assessment • sales/business development assessment additional assessments are available at a discounted cost through the site, as well; these include the step one survey ii (an honesty-integrity assessment referred to as the “sos”) and the Profile Xt job fit assessment (“PXt”), both from Profiles international. the site also allows members to upgrade to a full iapplicants online hiring system, with equal employment opportunity (eeo) compliance reporting and many other features, again at a discounted price negotiated on members’ behalf by hbma. members who are using this member benefit report lower hiring expenses, higher applicant numbers, less time to make a hire, and better quality hires as the result of the system. member bill carns, ceo of member company Practicemax, inc. stated that iapplicant and Profiles international have helped him grow Practicemax over the past few years. in 2012 alone, Practicemax used iapplicant and the assessments to hire over 50 new employees. Practicemax utilizes the iapplicants system because of its versatility. bill has stated that with five locations spread across the united states, this web application has enabled his human resource (hr) team to post openings quickly and receive online applications and assessments from anywhere at any time. it is not uncommon for Practicemax to receive applications within an hour or two of initial posting. iapplicants has also allowed bill’s company to become nearly paper free. the posting of positions, sourcing of candidates, distribution of qualified candidate information, and collection of interview surveys can all be done electronically without having to print or pass paper around. iapplicants also helps Practicemax’s hr staff cut through volumes of resumes and identify qualified candidates by asking pointed and specific questions related to the position. “Profiles international is also an important part of our recruitment process. We use the sos assessment for all of our positions.” this test helps the company identify applicants who are more likely to succeed in their environment. bill adds, “We have found the assessments to be spot on with predicting a new employee’s energy level, social ability skills, and attitude towards other important factors that are woven into our culture." Practicemax also uses the PXt model for key positions. they have found that the PXt scores of a candidate are a good indicator of a candidate’s future success in specific jobs based on comparisons from a job profile library. the assessment also provides invaluable interview questions for areas of potential concern. bill reiterates that “having access to both of these tools, iapplicants and Profiles international, through our membership in hbma is a tremendous benefit. i encourage our members who are not currently taking advantage SPOTLIGHT ON. . . 8 hbma billing • may. june.2013 HBMA Profile (continued on page 10) In
