Steve Verno, CMBSI, CMSCS, CEMCS, CPM-MCS Prior to the introduction of automobiles and airplanes, people traveled using horses, trains, and boats. the village smithy was replaced by the automotive mechanic. a farrier shoeing horses was replaced by tire salesmen and repair shops. as technologies advance, so must the businesses that support them. medicine cannot continue on the current path; our industry must adapt as medicine changes. the accountable care organizations (acos) are becoming the way many doctors will do business. as a patient, i have received life-saving medical care under this modern concept. there are some who call the aco the demise of sick patients. i, however, see the aco as a positive step towards improving the health of our sick parents and ill children. acos are a step toward giving us hope for a lifestyle we deserve. as a medical biller, i see that we need to change how we do business. as a patient on the medical-bill-receiving end, i find the aco as a way to reduce my medical costs. sun tzu, in the art of War, said “to defeat your enemy, you have to know your enemy.” like saint george battling the dragon, we fight the insurance battle to bring our doctors the revenue that they need to stay in business. to be prepared, we need to know about how the new method of medical care will be provided to us and to our doctors’ patients. the child of acos is the Patient centered medical home (Pcmh). the doctor who does not accept these new changes will find their patients leaving for the practice that uses the aco concept of medical care and the Pcmh to provide a quality of medical care that could not exist before. television advertisements are attracting the curious patient with the simple words: “We are your patient-centered medical home!” to defeat your enemy, you must know your enemy. to change, you need to know how medical care is going to be provided to the patient. We can become extinct or we can adapt to these new models. i have seen that these models can work and i like what i see.
