HBMA NeWs YOU HAVE BEEN VERY INVOLVED WITH HBMA OVER THE YEARS – CAN YOU PLEASE ExPAND ON YOUR WORK AND ExPERIENCE WITH HBMA? The first committee I ever got on was the Technology Committee. eventually, I became involved with the great Lakes Chapter of HBma and later became its president. We had several fairly successful meetings while there were still chapters. Later, I was approached and asked to run for the board. remarkably, I was elected. This began a long tenure of service to HBma, which I have enjoyed tremendously. some events that stand out to me were the HIPaa roadshows, attending meetings in Washington regarding the transition to the aNsI X12 format, as well as attending meetings and helping to make recommendations on behalf of HBma regarding Y2K readiness. This was a cake walk compared to the aNsI 5010 transition or ICd-10. more recently, I served on the Public relations Committee, where I helped to try to raise HBma’s profile in our industry by working to coordinate press releases, educational articles, and website content from our many subject matter expert volunteers. These days I serve on the ICd-10 Committee and the CaQH/COre workgroup. I’ve really enjoyed serving on these varied committees and have undoubtedly learned more than I’ve added. Probably the best experience of my whole time has been meeting the great people that I’ve gotten to know along the way and the wonderful times we’ve had working for HBma and our fellow members. I’ve really come to embrace servant leadership. I am honored and humbled that the Board of Directors has put its trust in me to lead the association. NOW LET'S FIND OUT ABOUT YOU. WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHERE DO YOU LIVE? I grew up in La Crosse, Wisconsin. after graduating from st. Olaf College, I returned home to help my dad in the business. my wife, Kris, and I were married in 1993. We currently live on an old farm near La Crosse with our three children, two dogs, and four horses. DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES OR OTHER INTERESTS? Outside of work, Kris and I are kept plenty busy with our children’s extracurricular activities. Our kids are involved in sports – between the three of them, hockey, football, basketball, soccer, and golf. additionally, my daughter is involved with 4-H and competes with her horse, Norman – Zips el Nino. When we’re not driving our kids around, our family enjoys a wide range of outdoor activities. I especially enjoy hunting, fishing, golf, downhill skiing, and fixing things on our farm. I also enjoy woodworking. I have always been interested in learning new things. It’s always a challenge to manage my time effectively and maintain that healthy work-life balance! IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD? Becoming the president of HBma was an unexpected surprise to me. I am honored and humbled that the Board of directors has put its trust in me to lead the association. I will do my utmost best to build on our past successes and help maintain and improve HBma’s standing in our industry. BOard OF dIreCTOrs HBma members voted for their 2015 Board of directors in late 2014.
