Help HBMA Remain Strong in 2015 WELCOME TO 2015, HBMA! I am honored to serve as your president this year. I’d like to extend a sincere thank you to the many well-wishers who have reached out to me, including the many current and past leaders whom I’ve spoken to these last two months. For those of you who don’t know me, I am the president of The Cvikota Company, based in La Crosse, Wisconsin. I grew up in the industry and have been an HBma member since 1992. I look forward to serving along with our board of directors, our committees, and our members to pursue four key initiatives for 2015: certification, education, business strategy, and effective governance. We made significant progress in these four areas in 2014. For example, certification was a hot topic last year. Your board of directors heard your concerns about certification, and an ad hoc committee convened to evaluate our certification program. This committee, chaired by Cindy Pittmon, is evaluating our certification program and working to make sure it meets the needs of our members. We also continued to strengthen the bread and butter of our association – our excellent educational programs. From our annual compliance program and our long-running owner’s and manager’s conference to our spring and fall meetings, only HBma delivers targeted, relevant educational programs for our industry. The challenges and opportunities facing us will be best met through these outstanding programs and learning opportunities. anyone who has been around the medical billing industry knows what dramatic changes have occurred over the years. I may be dating myself, but I remember when PCs revolutionized our industry. Now consider the many changes that have affected our industry in the last few years, and you’ll see that innovation and change are coming faster and faster. In 2014, the business PRESIDENT’S message and strategy workgroup was formed to look over the horizon and help position HBma to be successful and relevant not only today, but also in the future. Now it’s time to build on the successes of the past and find ways to bring new value to our members and support our clients. To accomplish this, HBma needs to work together as a team. From dues-paying members to committee volunteers to your elected board of directors, we must all provide one another with feedback and communicate our progress and efforts. I come to this position fully aware of the challenges we face both as an industry and as an association. The medical billing industry is in a constant state of transition due to commercial and regulatory pressures, many of which affect HBma – indeed, 2015 will be a challenging year. as your president, I will work to make the deliberations and strategies of the board of directors as transparent as I can and will also work to make sure Now it’s time to build on the successes of the past and find ways to bring new value to our members and support our clients. that our committee’s efforts are reported. as always, I urge you to volunteer in any way possible to support your colleagues and HBma. We are always stronger together. Our unity of purpose and dedication will go a long way to help make us successful. I am confident that our volunteer members will rise to the occasion, as we have so many times before, and help HBma continue to be the preeminent trade association in the revenue cycle management industry. I look forward to serving you this year. Curt Cvikota, CHBME, HBMA President ccvikota@cvikota.com THe jOurNaL OF THe HeaLTHCare BILLINg aNd maNagemeNT assOCIaTION 3
