in the two national events. One complaint that I have heard repeatedly is from frustrated members who do not want to spend significant money to attend a national educational Conference and then have to take yet more time out of the office and pay to attend another specialty event to get CHBme credits. We have to be sensitive to the cost of our programming for our members in terms of both money and time spent away from their offices. Madelon: according to the updated data that we recently received, the Fall 2013 educational Conference was a huge success in attendees and revenue for HBma. are you sure you want to make changes now, coming off of such a successful event? Phil: If you listen to the top business consultants in the nation – Tom Peters, gary Hamel, Daniel Pink, and our own Dave Jakielo – if you are doing things today the same way you were a year ago, you are or will soon be in serious trouble. We have been providing education the same way for 20 years. Now, that certainly does not mean we are going to throw out the successful elements of our long-term model, but we need to re-package a lot of it, get it into the right venues, present it to the targeted audiences, and improve its cost efficiency for our members. If we do not do it now, is it better to wait for it to fall apart and then do it? Keep in mind that some of this remodeling started with the spring educational Conference last april, so I would like to think that some members are already seeing improvement, which is why the fall conference was so successful. Regardless, I do not measure the effectiveness of our educational content in the number of attendees and revenue generated at any one conference. Madelon: How will you measure or define success in education programming? Phil: In the long run, I will look at the number of attendees. my end goal, however, is to hear members tell me that when the brochure comes out announcing the next event, they don’t run down the list of topics being presented or where the conference is being hosted before deciding to attend. I want to hear that the last conference was so robust in content that they would not miss the next one and that their only complaint about the conference was that it did not last longer. That is when I will believe that we are getting the job done. The burden is on us to present such high quality information that we earn 16 HBma BILLINg • JaNuaRY.FeBRuaRY.2014 a reputation for HBma educational programming in so strong a venue that nobody would miss an event. Madelon: It sounds like you have a lot of work ahead for you to make such a drastic change to the HBma educational programming. Phil: Yes we do. We have already accomplished a lot in the redesign, but now we have to get into the weeds a little and work out the details as well. Fortunately, we have a lot of very intelligent members on the education team who are eclectic in style, background, and views, but we all support the common goal of improving our overall education model. That makes a strong committee, diverse thinking, and a recognized common goal. Newly Minted Members Beila Steiner EZBILL, Inc. Laura Clifford Medical Billing Provider Solutions, Inc.
