Service, Stewardship, Value Creation SMITHBUCKLIN’S COMMITMENT TO HBMA By David Schmahl, Chief Executive, Healthcare & Scientific Industry Practice, SmithBucklin Corporation is with sincere respect for HBMA’s members, leaders, and stakeholders that I express my appreciation for the opportunity for SmithBucklin to serve HBMA as its new management partner. The time and care spent by HBMA leaders to explore, analyze, and ultimately decide upon a management change was executed with professionalism and rigor. All HBMA members should be comforted with the knowledge that their needs – and a vision for a healthy, relevant organization serving them for years to come – were the driving forces behind all of the questions and deliberations. I wish to thank everyone involved in the process, and I recognize the gravity of the decision. I would like to express my appreciation to Brad Lund and the caring professionals who served HBma during its history. Their commitment to serving HBma through a high-quality transition to our new Washington, D.C. office was evident from day one. You have heard and seen frequent reference to “change” and “transformation” surrounding HBma this past year. This, coupled with the velocity of present change in the healthcare and revenue management industries, is likely to have a dizzying effect. Before I outline how smithBucklin and your new staff team are equipped to help HBma thrive in this environment of change, I would like to describe three never-changing principles that define smithBucklin’s approach to our client organizations. • Service Excellence: serving members, leaders, and stakeholders with timely, accurate, clear, and comprehensive information in a friendly and engaging manner. • Stewardship: Caring for and nurturing something that we do not own. This means always putting HBma’s interests ahead of all others. • Value Creation: Working diligently to maximize value that our client organizations bring to their members, stakeholders, and respective industries. 12 HBma BILLINg • JaNuaRY.FeBRuaRY.2014 These have been in place, unchanged for 65 years, since our company formed behind our first client, who we proudly still serve today! HBma joins 29 other client organizations within smithBucklin’s Healthcare & scientific Industry Practice in expecting and experiencing these principles in their association with smithBucklin. On these foundations, HBma’s new staff team is in place and working alongside volunteers to ensure that HBma keeps pace with all the changes affecting your businesses. as this article is written, transition efforts were just beginning, including a leadership review of HBma’s governance and management committees. We applaud Jeanne’s vision for putting HBma’s strategic imperatives into action and practice. smithBucklin’s depth and breadth of expertise, leadingedge tools, and practice standards are accessible to HBma’s staff with only a few steps in any direction of our offices in DC and Chicago. Our “college” of sixteen association executives (including HBma’s executive director) engages in routine knowledge sharing and benchmarking. This culture of sharing and asking multiplies the knowledge and experience of your daily staff. Here are a few examples directly relevant to HBma: Certification: sixteen existing client organizations own and manage certification programs, and smithBucklin is also proud to serve the Institute for Credentialing excellence (ICe). This broad array of experience is being tapped to identify ways to expand recognition and value of the CHBme certification. membership: Identifying HBma’s membership needs and serving them with innovative and accessible offerings is the absolute highest objective of your staff team. We are bringing best practices for segmentation and needs analysis to ensure that HBma keeps pace with the changing profile of our industry. Knowledge and skills: efforts are underway to review existing curriculum, identify knowledge gaps, and develop impactful educational offerings that incorporate best practices in adult learning and instructional design. HBma is a key resource in the industry and our collaboration with volunteer leadership It
